Cairns & Great Barrier Reef – Feb 11 & 12

We really enjoyed the lovely town Cairns, Australia. For the first time we had overcast skies and some rain, but we didn’t let that stop us. We visited the Cairns Aquarium to get a preview of what we would see on the reef. After a bit of shopping at Woolworth’s (very popular in both New Zealand and Australia) we went on our very own pub crawl. We can never pass up an opportunity for a pub crawl.

On Wednesday we took a boat out to a pontoon that floats above The Great Barrier Reef. From the pontoon, we could observe the reef from a submarine, a glass bottom boat, an underwater viewing room, and, of course, by snorkeling. The water was a green color due to a lot of recent rain which brought a deluge of fresh water into the ocean. Nonetheless, it was an amazing experience, and we saw numerous beautiful fish as well as striking coral. Unforgettable!

That evening we took the Mixology I “Class” which we all aced! We participated by measuring, shaking, and pouring Brandy Alexanders, Espresso Martinis, and Grasshoppers. We are learning many important life-skills on this trip! Looking forward to Mixology II next week. Cheers.
