Komodo – Feb 19

First stop in Indonesia was Rinca Island, which is part of Komodo National Park. We saw the amazing Komodo Dragons in action. Here are some fun facts we learned about the Komodo Dragon:

-They grow to approx. 10 ft long and weight about 300 lbs as adults

-The are good swimmers

-Their long, forked tongues are used to smell as well as taste

-They are cannibals so their young must live in trees for several years to avoid an early death

-They have sharp, serrated teeth similar to sharks

-Their drool (which is what actually kills their prey) contains 50+ strains of bacteria plus venom

-They can smell blood from over a mile away

We were “lucky” to see males fighting/wrestling/chasing each other over the lovely female dragons. Needless to say, we kept our distance.

We’ve tried to upload a few videos. Not sure if that has worked.

They are amazing creatures, aren’t they? We had a chance to see them on our trip to Indonesia last fall.

Hi, I just realized that these e-mails have been blocked by my spam filter. Hopefully, I fixed that!

Good Lord ~ can you say “Jurassic Park?!?” Those things are seriously creepy. It is hard to imagine how something that eats its young could have endured through time. There are so many strange critters here ~ I am convinced that the earth is a giant cosmic zoo!

I hope you are having a wonderful time. We are back in Chicago after staying through the first week of February in Florida. Yesterday, it was in the mid-50s! Back to reality in a few days, tho’.
    Hugs to all. Paula
