Mombasa, Kenya – Mar 19 – 21

Kenya welcomed us with open arms and a very large M to welcome the Marys!

We went on a Tamarind Dhow cruise for a lovely lunch. We were joined by some of our new friends Roxanne and Jeanne.

The excellent band kept the afternoon lively.

We saw Fort Jesus on the banks of the river.

We tried to stay cool with some Pink Gin & Tonics with pomegranate juice and rosemary.

This was the team in our Safari jeep for our trip through the largest protected area in Kenya.

Why did the elephant cross the road?

…to hang out in the shade with its friends?!

The elephants coat themselves with red dirt to protect them from the sun

Obviously, we saw tons of elephants, but we viewed a lot of other interesting animals as well.

We had a wonderful time at the park. Our drive home was absolutely crazy due to the 2-lane highway being completely clogged with semis heading to and from Nairobi. The “tourist police” jeep that was aiding us in navigating the awful traffic did help, but the off-roading we did next to the highway, through sand, over rocks, and in construction areas was unlike anything we’d experienced before. There were cars, cattle, dogs, chickens, motorbikes, goats, and pedestrians trying to stay out of the way as our caravan of 4×4 Land Cruisers wove on and off the road to get us back to the ship. We were sweaty and covered in dust when we returned (2 hours late), but we all made it. Our watches said we’d all walked over 15,000 steps and climbed over 50 flights of stairs while in the jeep. Another adventurous day!

Holy, moly, ladies, your reputation precedes you! “M”

That must have been quite the adventure through the wildlife preserve. Wondering if they feed the animals or just let Darwin have his way??? That trip back sounds really stressful – sort of like a Kennedy commute – LOL! Thanks for all the great pictures! xox

You all are very brave and adventurous!! Happy you got to see so many animals in the wild. The traffic sounds similar to what we experienced in Indonesia.
    No off roading though!!
