Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), South Africa – Apr 1

Due to strong winds we arrived about 2 hours late in Gqeberha (or PE). We were worried that our final safari would be canceled. Luckily, Viking worked it out, and we ended up having our best safari at Sibuyu Game Reserve.

We viewed hundreds of antelopes – mostly the nyala (white stripes on backs) and impala.

We finally saw cape buffalo – one of the Big 5.

Hard to believe we’ve become accustomed to seeing all of these lovely creatures…

But this guy was a first for us! We were about 20 feet away as he lounged around near the female lion, their cubs, and the buffalo they were munching on in the background.

While we were checking him out the lioness took off to chase a warthog, leaving her cubs to wonder where she went.

Mr. Lion remained unconcerned.

We celebrated out great day at Sibuya with some cocktails on top of a mountain.

Finally, we enjoyed a buffet dinner where we were able to try impala and delish South African wines. Such a fun day!

Holy moly ~ please say there is a Jurassic Park fence you passed through! Just wondering what you would have seen if you had gotten there a bit earlier… yikes!!!

They do have gates and electric fences, and workers who were trimming trees were guarded by a man with a large weapon. It was a very cool experience.
